Sam was first assigned to the 6th Battalion in Brisbane, where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander for two years.  His skills and dedication led to his selection for specialisation in Reconnaissance and Sniping, where he took on the role of platoon commander for this specific capability. Following his promotion to Captain, Sam was then posted to the 8/9th Battalion as a Company 2IC, where he continued to serve both domestically and abroad on operational deployments. Later on, Sam was selected to be posted to Defence Force Recruiting in Canberra HQ, where he gained an extensive understanding of the Defence Force Recruitment process as the Staff-Officer Recruitment and Attraction. His final full-time posting was with ADFA as an instructor. After his discharge, he currently maintains his service as a Reservist.

Despite facing challenges during the Defence Force recruitment process, including prior knee surgeries that required waivers, an unsuccessful Officer selection board, and unavailable roles, Sam’s experiences have inspired him to advocate for greater support and opportunities for the next generation of candidates.

His personal journey through the recruitment process has given him a unique perspective on the obstacles and hardships that aspiring candidates may encounter. He understands the frustration and disappointment that can come from setbacks and rejections, but he also knows that these experiences can be transformative and provide valuable lessons for future success.
